Saturday

My family and I have been busy lately.  Hence my absence on the web.  With all the business, we're ready for a break.  Lucky for us, there's a TON going on Downtown this Saturday.  It's time for fun!

Get your morning started with a cup of coffee or tea from Pour Jon's before heading over to the 34th Annual Fishing Derby (begins at 7:30am).  My boys love this annual event.  Stay for Farmer's Market (opens at 8am).  It's Kids' Day this Saturday, so be sure to bring them along.  The scavenger hunt (with prizes) along with other activities begin at 10am.

You'll probably be hot, thirsty, and hungry after playing and picking out vegetables and granola at the market, so head to Cafe on Broadway next.  They've got cold drinks and yummy lunches!

Then it's rest time.  :-)  Stop by the Library and pick up a few books before heading home.

If resting isn't your thing (it's certainly not mine!), perhaps a little shopping is in order...  Amy's Closet, Four Corner Frames, Amandromeda.  Local Flair,  Two Gals Junk, Siloam Flowers and Gifts, and more!

Time for dinner!  Fratelli's or Emelia's are both good choices!  Grab a dessert to go and head out for the evening activities...

*There's a play at the Sager Creak Art Center.  The Kitchen Witches is playing this weekend.

*Second Saturday Music is in the park!  Yay for Cobb Brothers Bluegrass Band!

Bodies tired and memories full of fun, it will be time to head for home.  Rest up, though, because there's always something happening on Broadway Street!

Weekend Plans

I don't know about you, but after a few days of beautiful weather it's nice to have a little rain!  Having been outside most of the week, it's nice to think of a few days inside catching up on crafts and sipping tea.  Fortunately both of those things can be done Downtown this weekend.

Crafting:

*Creative Corner on Broadway has a Saturday Scrap Night.  (By the way...Julie has new graduation themed papers.  Perfect for scrapbooking pictures of your graduate.)

*Sager Creek Quilts and Yarnworks has a Saturday class titled: Color and Fabric Selection.  It's being taught by published author Donna Thomas.

Tea Sipping:

*Cafe on Broadway is always a good place for a cup of tea followed by a bowl of warm soup.

*Pour Jon's also has quite the selection of tea and typically has live music playing on the weekends.

So...get out and enjoy some rainy-day activities this weekend!  If crafting and tea sipping don't happen to be your idea of a good time, there's always eating, shopping, and reading.  Regardless of what you choose...

Weekend Plans

It's going to be a fun weekend Downtown.  I'm excited!

I'm planning on taking my oldest son to see Pollyanna.  This delightful play is on stage at the Sager Creek Arts Center.  Two of our very good family friends are acting in the play making it even more special for our family.  We might even start the evening off with appetizers at Emelia's before heading to the Arts Center.  The play shows both Friday and Saturday evenings.  Remember to click on the Downtown Businesses tab to find the sites for Sager Creek Arts Center and Emelia's; details regarding tickets and contact info can be found there.

Then on Saturday morning we're heading to City Park for opening day at the Siloam Springs Farmer's Market!  Yay!  We are excited!  This year's market will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8am-1pm.  Grab a basket and head Downtown to stock your fridge with fresh veggies.  Yum!

Photography Exhibit at Local Flair Art Gallery

On Wednesday evening, I attended a wonderful exhibit at Local Flair Art Gallery, showcasing work by JBU's Senior Photography Class students. Seven artists were represented, with as many styles and viewpoints. The show, organized by student and photographer Alexa Lambert, offered a wide array of talent. I was really blown away by the creativity and vision exhibited by these artists.


Natalia Castelar offered a collection of photographs called COLORS that combined color, fashion and photography. Each photo portrayed a woman dressed in a gorgeous, monochromatic dress and shoes with color-coordinated accessories.


Alexa Lambert, the organizer, had several photographs that replicated famous works of art, such as da Vinci's Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, and Edvard Munch's The Scream. She did an amazing job of conveying these master works through color, lighting, subject matter and attention to detail.


(the) Matthew Smith had some amazing professional-quality portraits. My favorite was of some guys wearing hunting hats with ear flaps. There was something dark and mysterious about the photo, and I was struck with the desire to know more about it.



Josh Adams chose to focus his work on Siloam Springs, its history and people. He has interviewed several local individuals (my husband and sister, to name a few) and he plans to show his full collection on March 14, 2010 at the Sager Creek Arts Center.



Kyle Weir created a completely original and inspired interactive piece. It was a triptych based on Galations 5:1- It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Viewers were drawn to stockade-like openings in a black fabric wall. After placing one's head and hands in the first set of openings, an image would appear of the viewer bound in chains. The second opening would show them free, but the third would show them bound once more. The images were developed in a darkroom process called "liquid light."


Christina Bunker's work struck a personal chord with me, with her expertly photographed cookbook of favorite family recipes. I've often dreamed of creating something like this for myself. It's a beautiful and intimate collection of recipes, bound as a hardcover book (by blurb.com). I was even able to sample the delicious peanut butter and chocolate "buckeyes" from the cookbook at the refreshment table.


Hannah Hudson rounded out the show with various pieces of art that illustrated verses, quotes and poems. They were all very different from one another, yet they shared a common theme of the beauty and meaning of words. My favorite was one with Love as the word of choice.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast

The Sager Creek Arts Center is currently showing performances of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Janelle Sando and Jason Henson perform the title roles. Word on Main Street contributor Hope Johnstone attended Sunday's performance and said, "This talented cast not only filled their roles as each character but added an appropriate amount of whimsy."

Upcoming performances will take place on June 25, 26, and 27 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday, June 28 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $12 for senior citizens, students and SCAC members. Tickets may be obtained by calling the Arts Center at 524-4000.
