Dog Days of Summer Recap

My family really enjoyed the Dog Days of Summer event earlier this month.

Siloam Springs' canines headed Downtown with their owners for a morning of fun!

We liked the parade best of all!

But the rescue dog demonstration was a close second.

Have you ever seen a dog climb up and down a ladder?  Me neither.  And, yes, I was impressed!

Make plans to attend next year's event.  It's always the first Saturday in August.

The 4th Annual Dog Day of Summer
 
On August 4th, dogs and their people will take to the streets of downtown Siloam Springs! The 4th Annual Dog Day of Summer, hosted by Main Street Siloam Springs, will welcome special guest emcee Brad Reed, host of Fox News Edge, for a day of dog contests, a dog parade down historic Broadway Street, pet-themed vendors, concessions, and more!  

Last year’s event drew an estimated 300 participants, with over 35 dog contest registrants. “Monster”, a hairless Chihuahua breed, won the Ugliest Dog contest for the 3rd year in a row!

Participation in the parade and attendance at the park is free. To participate in contests, pet owners can pre-register for $10/first dog, and $8/each additional dog, by picking up an application at the locations listed below*, or by downloading the form online. Day-of registration will begin at 9:00am in Twin Springs Park for $12/first dog, and $8/ additional dogs.

The parade, beginning at 9:30am, will start and end in Twin Springs Park after winding up and down historic Broadway Street.

Dog Contests this year will include:

• Cutest Dog
• Cutest Puppy
• Pet/Owner Lookalike
• Best Dog Trick
• Best Costume
• Best All-Around

At the event, vendors will offer dog apparel for sale, treats for dogs and people, information about local dog services, and a raffle. All participants will receive Main Street’s 2012 Retail Coupon to encourage business downtown.  The event will also spotlight Tailwaggers, a local animal adoption advocacy group that highlights the need to spay/neuter pets. Dogs available for adoption will also participate in the event.

Dog Days of Summer

I so wish I could have attended the Dog Days of Summer event.  It fell smack in the middle of my family's vacation.  Bummer!

It looks like fun was had by all!

Dog Day of Summer

Main Street's 2nd Annual Dog Day of Summer

Start planning a dog costume now! Dog Day of Summer is next Saturday and will kick off with a Doggie Parade down University and Broadway Streets starting at 9:30 am, followed by Doggie Contests in the park--Cutest Dog, Best Costume, Best Trick, Best Dog/Owner Look-Alike, Ugliest Dog, and Best In Show. Dog vendors and trainers will be on hand, as well as the Siloam Springs Animal Shelter with dogs ready for adoption. Registration starts at 9 a.m. in City Park. Cost to participate is $10 per dog. All proceeds go to Main Street Siloam Springs, Inc. Thanks to our sponsors, Arvest Bank and Simmons Pet Food!

1st Annual Dog Day of Summer Dog Walk

I'll just tell you right off the bat that words will not fully capture the cuteness of Saturday's Dog Walk. There were adorable dogs all over the place! My heart was completely stolen by Molly, a tiny French Bulldog, as well as two enormous bull mastiffs that had recently been adopted at the Siloam Springs Animal Shelter.


There were all sorts of breeds, large and small, and it could not have been a lovelier day for the event. At the registration desk, participants were given Main Street mugs filled with dog treats and plastic bags for, well...you know. The main event was a leisurely one-mile stroll through Bob Henry Park. Halfway through, the organizers kindly provided water for the approximately 25 dogs participating.


After the walk, there were a variety of contests, and the competition was steep! Miss Dogwood and Miss Teen Dogwood were among the judges. There were awards given for Cutest Big Dog, Cutest Little Dog, Best Trick, Pet/Owner Look-alike, Oldest Dog, etc. Lord Byron, a lovely little guy with a flowing white tail and a sparkling personality won Best All-Around. The event also featured various vendors of pet-related items and a Frisbee catching demonstration. Shelley Simmons, Director of Main Street, did an awesome job putting it all together, and I will look forward to next year's Dog Walk.
